Michael R. Schuppenhauer, Ph.D., has over 25 years of scientific, engineering, finance, and business experience in cleantech, renewable energy, and biosciences. Michael built and operated his first anaerobic (biogas) digester in 1987. He has been active in the US in the field of biogas and biofuels since 2006, developing markets and projects for large industrial and rural/insular biogas settings, and leas as CEO & President the US operations of Farmatic Inc. Since 2018 he was an Affiliate with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Principal Investigator of two U.S. DOE ARPA-E Awards. He raised a total of $10.5 million in federal grants, looking at a broad pool of domestic feedstocks, marine resources, and overall sustainability of biogas from crop residues from farm to gate. He published in 2015 a US map of biogas potential on a county-by-county basis, revealing the potential to be higher than 8.8 quads or equivalent to more than 50% of US transportation fuel.

Previously, Michael was Vice President at Fleishman-Hillard in strategic communications and public policy at the state and federal levels, and Senior Editor and Director of Business Development with BioCentury, Inc. Prior, he was in Paris, France with Hambrecht & Quist (now JP Morgan), generating and executing corporate finance business across Europe. Before that, he was with McKinsey & Company in Zurich, Brussels, and Stockholm, and worked as a project manager with Prognos AG in Basel and Munich. He advised the German and Swiss federal governments on their economic strategies by kick-starting emerging company growth. He has also served in the preparation of a large global merger, raised close to $100 million for two IPOs, and established and raised two successful venture funds.
